HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Since the beginning, Matalan has been a leader in value retail, offering affordability and quality for families across the nation. Our journey began with a simple vision of bringing quality fashion and home products to families at affordable prices. Today, we stand proud as a trusted name in the retail industry, driven by our core values. Matalan was founded in 1985 when John Hargreaves opened a market stall in Liverpool. We opened our first store in Preston, taking inspiration from the outlet malls concepts in the USA. More stores quickly followed with our out-of-town retail park locations, which made Matalan a household name. Fast forward to today, we are one of the UK’s leading value retail businesses with more than 200 stores across the UK and Northern Ireland, two UK Distribution Centres (Knowsley and Corby) and our Support Hub based in Knowsley. We have also grown globally with 50 stores across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The collaboration between our Support Hub, Retail Stores and Distribution Centres is at the heart of Matalan’s success. In the fast-paced Retail environment, it’s essential to keep evolving. Our automation, ecommerce, dropship products, click and collect and home delivery are all part of the technology that drives our success.
