APPRENTICESHIPS

We launched our Credible Alternative to University scheme in 2021 and we’re really proud of the success it’s had already. We offer young people the chance to study while developing a career in a variety of areas including Buying & Merchandising, HR, Customer Services and Marketing. So far, most of our apprentices have been offered full-time contracts and promotions within their first 12 months at Matalan and we were so proud to be placed 35th in Rate My Apprenticeship’s Top 100 Employers 2022-23. Our apprenticeships make a fantastic option for anyone looking to lay the foundations of a career in Retail with plenty of real-world experience and no debt.

We offer a flexible approach to apprenticeships, recruiting when a vacancy comes up. Recent apprentice roles we’ve recruited for include:

Buying & Merchandising

(rotation between the 2 areas) – B&M Level 4 with Fashion Retail Academy

Approx. 18 months

People

(rotation between Talent & Operations) – HR Level 3 with MBKB

Approx. 18 months

Marketing

(Digital Design Level 6 with MMU) – 4 years and Business Admin Level 3 with Asset Training

Approx. 15 months

Customer Services

(Customer Service Level 2 with Lifetime Training)

Apprentice

I joined Matalan as a People Apprentice – and it was an amazing decision! I learnt so much across all aspects of HR and had the pleasure of working with so many incredible people who supported by development in role. Since completing my apprenticeship, I have also gained a permanent role within our Business Transformation team!

My apprenticeship has allowed me to gain a Level 2 Customer Practitioner qualification where I worked really hard to achieve a distinction in all 3 exams and I’ve now secured a full-time role here. During my apprenticeship, I’ve gained confidence through so many aspects from being able to speak to customers and resolve queries over the phone to responding to many customer complaints via email. I enjoy acting as a role model for other apprentices and undergraduate students helping evaluate their career options.

Matalan were supportive in allowing me time to complete my apprenticeship tasks and for studying and off the job hours. My manager and I had weekly check in’s to monitor my progress in both the role and the apprenticeship. As I had no HR background or experience, I learnt many new skills and completed external qualifications such as my MHFA course and the apprenticeship enabled me to learn on the job and link theory with practice. The team are friendly and very sociable. The company has a great company culture that values teamwork and progression.
